Category: Instructional Practice

The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways.

Artifact: Informational Text Features Lesson Plan

Description: My Informational Text Features lesson plan provides evidence that I have met InTASC Standard 8. The lesson plan is organized so that students will learn a central concept of the language arts discipline in an active, accessible and meaningful way that requires them to build skills of inquiry and research. It utilizes a variety of instructional strategies – including small and large group work and both online and print research – to encourage students to develop a deeper understanding of the content.

Reflection: My Informational Text Features lesson plan allowed for my professional growth, as it required me to look for engaging and meaningful ways to assure that my students had mastered the required content. Because this was my first time using this lesson plan, in my future teaching practice I will use my reflections to tweak the lesson and will continue to create other meaningful and engaging experiences for students that utilize other instructional strategies.

Artifact: Memoir Unit Plan

Description: My Memoir Unit Plan provides evidence that I have met InTASC Standard 8. In this unit plan, students write and illustrate a short six word memoir, read and respond to a short story memoir, and write their own memoir. By employing a variety of instructional strategies – such as reading comprehension, vocabulary study, and writing short and long works – this unit plan encourages learners to develop a deep understanding of the content area of memoir and helps them build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways.

Reflection: The experience of creating and implementing this unit plan allowed for my professional growth, as I was able to see the strengths and weaknesses of students (such as writing or reading comprehensions) and the importance of providing a variety of instructional strategies for a diverse group of students. In my future teaching practice, I will be sure to plan lessons that include a variety of instructional strategies and skill-building opportunities, so that students can develop a thorough understanding of the content.
