Talking to the Text

During my student teaching placement, I have had the opportunity to join my cooperating teacher for training in Reading Apprenticeship, a program that the Dearborn Public School District is beginning to implement in its middle schools. Reading Apprenticeship is an instructional approach that intends to help middle school, high school, and community college students develop skills and knowledge to improve their engagement, fluency, and comprehension of content-area materials and texts. At the training, we learned about the effectiveness of “Talking to the Text” (annotating text) for improving reading comprehension. We began to implement this strategy in class. Below are some samples of how our students “talked to the text” of an argumentative essay.
